What should have LC done?

So a commentor told me to “lead by example” and explain what LC should have done and they reminded me that I never posted (in a post) about what I thought Lime Crime should do in response to the controversy. I had written this as a reply to someone but never put it in a post.

“I actually considered what she was going to ask me when she first messaged me and from that I talked it over a little bit with my boyfriend to postulate what was possible to do at this point (a little under a month before the palette’s release and I understood that from a business standpoint, she wasn’t going to withdraw the palette.
I know with MAC with the Rodarte Collection, they decided to not release the products at all and they took a financial hit but I know they’re large enough to absorb the loss. Lime Crime on the otherhand, I knew was not going to be able to do that.
I thought that she might have asked me what she could have done and after giving it some thought I would have liked if she dropped the campaign and apologized, for real. It’s late in the game to completely abandon the product and not cost effective to try to reprint new labels”
I should specify that at the minimum, I would have liked to see the “Don’t let her milky skin, pouty mouth and flushed cheeks fool you; underneath the poised facade, there lies a heart of a tigress…” removed from the campaign along with a rewrite of the description for the Chinadoll look.

Yume Ninja’s thoughts on Lime Crime’s statements on the “ChinaDoll” campaign. Sad that once again completely valid points will fall on deaf ears over at LC headquarters.

To be supremely crystal clear, because I think it needs to be said:

I was notified by someone about this tumblr post which screen capped my public comment to Mai.

Before anybody interjects/twists/or mentions it, My opinion is not a representation of the companies I work for. And never will be. The opinion I expressed is mine, and mine alone.

I don’t want anybody trying to tie this comment to whatever gossip is out there.

posted that on Mai’s blog because I read her blog today and was appalled!! I also posted the comment because I am Asian-American (which I think we can all say is INDISPUTABLE) and have experienced actual racism while growing up in America. The racism I have experienced has come varying degrees of violent intent, malicious intent, and non-malicious intent.

Though I know to some degree I cannot stop people from jumping to that conclusion or confusing the matter. There are no 3rd parties or agendas in my beliefs, opinions, or ethnic background.

Thank. You. All of this. To add my own two cents to this — Not only is her product lackluster and extremely price gouged (which is something she herself has admitted) but selling a product with racism and cultural appropriation and then trying to disregard the fact that cultural appropriation is an actual existing problem is unbelievably asinine. There is an incredible difference in borrowing aspects of culture in a way that respects and honors that original culture, and then there is perpetuating stereotypes that Asian women have constantly tried to work against.

I think where a lot of people go wrong is that they believe because some stereotypes made against Asians are arguably “good” traits, such as intelligence or exotic beauty (and even that is WAY problematic imo), it’s not harmful to perpetuate them. But it is. And to portray Asian women in a completely uninspired culturally degrading way without bringing anything new to the table is not artistic and it is not unique, it is just fucking stupid. To further try to guilt people into submission by referring to the “ChinaDoll” stereotype as a person is just plain insulting (as though we should feel bad for hurting her “artistic character“‘s feelings?!) and full of mystical fuckery that this woman is well known for.

Conclusively, Doe Deere yet again makes me want to effing barf. Nothing new to see here though on that front I suppose.

There is nothing pretty about racism, Lime Crime.

Educate yourself on the controversy and Lime Crime’s lack of response to valid concerns and join the boycott.

I think the last line was seriously passive aggressive and further makes me believe that she is probably just incredibly dense.

This is really immature, she blew of Mai and is now acting like people are going out of their way to be overdramatic. She’s known people were upset about this since the promo image came out and has done nothing.

Never Apply Lipstick in Public: Lime Crime Boycott ›

unepetitejoliefille:

Myself and other makeup enthusiasts are spreading the word regarding a complete boycott of Lime Crime’s products, due to their shameless cultural appropriation. Doe Deere and her company have been repeatedly informed of the offensive nature of their current advertising, yet they delete objection…

Update on the Boycott

A follower made this comment earlier today, this is a great template of what to say if you’re tweeting/posting on Facebook:

“Hi there, a bunch of make up enthusiasts are spreading the word about Lime Crime’s new campaign, “China Doll”. The company have been informed it is offensive and their reaction was to delete objection where they could and explain away the concept as fantasy. There is more information in the link here, http://portraitofmai.blogspot…. . I would appreciate if you would take time to read this and possibly participate in the boycott campaign. Thank you.”

Polite and to the point!

Marketing

I just want to throw out there that perhaps Dough is doing all of this shady business as a means of advertisement. Look at what she has made us do… talk about her product openly and willingly, perhaps not in the best light, but she’s gotten us to talk about it. Now she’s gotten us to want to boycott it… but that is still putting her product out there, still talking about it. All she wants is to be known whether it is to be known for good or for evil… it appears to not matter.

If we really want to boycott Lime Crime. Let’s not talk about it! Silence sometimes is the best solution to solving drama. We’re part of the contributors by talking about and posting about it. If the drama lingers, it will always be there, whether or not one has stepped away from it.

I understand this blog and I appreciate its existence because something was needed. But have you ever thought that we could be contributing to all the shady business and drama as well?

If this wasn’t an issue of racism and blatant and intentional use of a stereotype to sell makeup, perhaps ignoring Lime Crime would work. In this scenario though where there has been intentional censorship for those who’ve stated they’ve been offended while incredibly racist statements were allowed through, I don’t think silence would work. This has the potential to be a teachable moment for many people and ties into bigger issues than just makeup in my opinion. Speaking out already got Makeupbee to pull their Lime Crime contest, I think we could accomplish a lot more by continuing to speak out.
